cute-november-clipart-1-1 - Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Academy

Hello Lincoln Families,

Report cards went home Monday, November 22nd. Thank you for sending in the signed envelope. Students who do receive yards! Please return them if you haven't done so. Also, Just so you are aware, Mr. Hubble said there is an error on the report card. At the top, it should have 2021-22.  I missed it too!

Just a reminder: The information on the report card is an update since we last talked at our "goal-setting conference" about the learning goals your child is currently mastering and what practice your child still may need. What does this mean? How can you help your child? Researchers in the field of education continue to say students should read at home for at least 20 minutes a day consistently on their own. A book that is not too easy, too hard, but just right! The goal in 4th grade for Lexia this time of year is close to 17. If your child is below that and if you have time, it's okay to have them work a little extra on those Lexia skills at home. At conferences, we discussed IXL Diagnostic. Have your child show you where they are currently in the different math standards, and the lower areas if they have time, practice. Multiplication and division fluency practice is always a good idea! Keep in mind all learning goals do not need to be mastered until the end of 4th grade, so we have some time:) If you have any questions, my door is always open!

I hope everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable break! I also hope students find some time over the next five days to read some "good fit" books. They all went home with one:) Today each student was given a green bookmark with some of the comprehension strategies we have learned and some we will be learning to add to the reading "tool kit". Also, on the back is a reading log. This reading log is not to clutter our lives with more unnecessary paper. The intention is for students to reflect on their reading plans along with recording pages read to monitor reading rates.  Here are some things young readers should consider: Reading Log Reflection. In addition, if your child reads you no longer need to sign the planner, but instead mark your initials in the box on the bookmark. If it gets signed your child will continue to get yards towards a touchdown. The comprehension/reading rate bookmarker will be kept inside the "good fit" book that comes home every night. It is the student's responsibility to bring it to you to get it signed and not expected for you to remind and handle. Each student will turn it in after the book is finished and get a new one.

Our annual ice skating field trip will take place on December 8th from 2:23-3:15. If you want to walk over with us, we will leave at 2:20. You can also meet us at the rink. Thanks!

Book Order Up-date: Scholastic has a supply change issue. Orders were supposed to be here by Nov. 22nd.  I checked in with them and now it's supposed to be here on Dec.7th. Thank you for your understanding:)

This Week's Academic Focus

Reading: Students all have a new individual reading goal that has been recorded in their "reader's notebooks". We will continue meeting weekly in small groups and individual reading conferences. These strategies are intended to be added to their "reading tool kit". The whole class goal will be teaching "theme" in a story. The theme is a moral, lesson, or message in a story.

Writing: Most students have finished or are close to publishing their essays. The writing process takes time to develop especially working with students individually. Each week, using a specific mini-lesson, I encourage students to focus on one thing to develop. Once that is achieved, they move on to another focus. Because of this long process, grades on the report card may reflect this. It may take all year to get these young writers to achieve mastery of "writing to task" simply because of time and the many goals that are attached to writing to the task i.e. sentence structure, figurative language, writing process. Thank you for your understanding.

Math:   We continue to focus on fractions on a number line and relating fractions to find equivalence and comparing fractions. In addition, Students are learning strategies to find equivalence and comparisons.

Illustrative Mathematics. (Here is the link if you are interested in looking at the program).

Science: The Birth of Rocks will be our next unit.

Here is the link for the Unit Birth of Rocks

Social Studies:  The focus will be Human Geography in the United States and the push & pull factors of migration to America. I will use different interactive read alouds along with this unit to give our class background knowledge for certain historical events that have taken place regarding migration. This unit preludes a big historical presentation that each 4th grader will do that will take a few months to complete. More information is to come.

Positivity Project focus this week is Kindness.

Important Information

We have a peanut-sensitive classroom. Below is a list of snacks and foods allowed in our classroom for everyday snacks, and holiday parties. All of these items need to be packaged and bought from a store, unopened with visible food labels. No homemade items.
In addition, please make sure that everyday snacks sent in are also quick and easy for your child to handle. For example please no yogurt, pudding, uncut fruit, or messy items for everyday snacks. This avoids spilling on our school devices, furniture, etc.  Thank you for your understanding.

We love to celebrate birthdays! For students who would like to celebrate their birthdays in our class please bring in non-food items. For example instead of cupcakes maybe pencils.
