March is Reading Month - His Love

Hello Lincoln Families,

This Friday we will have our traditional 4th-grade "Read-In" to begin March Reading Month! Students can bring in snacks (see the safe snacks list below), clear drinks, a stuffed animal, blanket, pillow, and lots and lots of their favorite books! I let the students know on Friday and they are really looking forward to it!

Next week Trimester two report cards go home! Students will be taking the final unit tests in math and science, along with reading and writing assessments. Please try to have your child in school if possible so I can finish collecting the data for the reports. I also want to remind you that if your child receives a 1 or 2 in any area, practice for those goals will continue in the classroom and in some cases at home. In conclusion, if you did not have a spring student-led conference, I encourage you to meet with your child to go over their presentation goal slides. All students have done them and are ready to present!

We only have five weeks left until Spring Break! This time of year the beginning signs of "spring fever" start showing among the students-myself included! We can start to get lackadaisical with everyday responsibilities. For example, students forget to bring charged Chromebooks, bring planners and good-fit books to school. When the weather starts getting warmer, and it will, the student reading plan doesn't happen. I encourage you to continue to give helpful reminders to your child towards their independent goals and responsibilities. One suggestion might be to have your child pack their backpack the night before making sure the checklist of school items listed above are packed. There are only 9-10 instructional weeks left when you include "testing season",  half-days and field trips, etc. before our 4th graders are 5th graders. Let's finish strong! Thank you for your support. Have a great week!

This Week's Academic Focus

Reading: Students all have a new individual reading goal that has been recorded in their "reader's notebooks". We will continue meeting weekly in small groups and individual reading conferences. These strategies are intended to be added to their "reading tool kit". The whole class goal will be to focus on the main idea/details in non-fiction including using text features in the text. As we finish this reading goal, I will start mini-lesson teaching how to analyze, compare, and contrast certain fiction and non-fiction text.

Writing: Our focus will be on persuasive writing. 4th graders are given a thesis statement and will learn how to develop a five-paragraph paper, using the writing process,  to convince or persuade a reader of their opinion. Our 4th graders get to choose if students should or should not wear a mask in school. They will come up with supporting reasons and examples and write a five-paragraph essay.

Students are also working on their Student-goal Google Slides for conferences. Students will be encouraged to still present their goal slides to their adults at home regardless of whether they are having a winter/spring conference!

Math:  Unit 3 Extending Operations to Fractions. This week we are working on adding and subtracting fractions with a whole number. Students will be taking the unit test this week!

Science: Energizing Everything will be our next unit of study. Students will explore energy, energy transfer, and electricity. Students will be taking the unit test this week!

Social Studies:  This unit is on pause and will begin the second week in March. The focus will be Human Geography in the United States and the push & pull factors of migration to America. I will use different interactive read alouds along with this unit to give our class background knowledge for certain historical events that have taken place regarding migration. This unit preludes a big historical presentation that each 4th grader will do that will take a few months to complete. More information is to come. In the month of February, we will also focus on Read alouds about the courageous people who were part of the Underground Railroad for Black History Month.

Positivity Project focus this week is Enthusiasm

Important Information for the Classroom:

We have a peanut-sensitive classroom. Below is a list of snacks and foods allowed in our classroom for everyday snacks, and holiday parties. All of these items need to be packaged and bought from a store, unopened with visible food labels. No homemade items.
In addition, please make sure that everyday snacks sent in are also quick and easy for your child to handle. For example please no yogurt, pudding, uncut fruit, or messy items for everyday snacks. This avoids spilling on our school devices, furniture, etc.  Thank you for your understanding.

We love to celebrate birthdays! For students who would like to celebrate their birthdays in our class please bring in non-food items. For example instead of cupcakes maybe pencils.
